Tyrrell County Ecotourism Committee
Who We Are
The
Tyrrell County Ecotourism Committee is a
subcommittee of the Tyrrell County
Tourism Authority – the first in the
state, to our knowledge, that has
formally created a special committee
dedicated to promoting ecotourism.
The
Ecotourism Committee is comprised of
representatives from local, state, and
federal government agencies; non-profit
organizations; and local business
owners.
What We Do
We work to
promote and protect the county’s vast
natural resources through tourism, in a
manner that benefits the local economy
and pays tribute to the region’s rich
cultural heritage.
Why We Do It
Tyrrell
County, situated in northeastern North
Carolina within the Albemarle-Pamlico
estuary, provides a perfect backdrop for
ecotourism. Eighty-five percent of the
county’s land base is wetlands, which
provide critical habitat for more than
20 rare, threatened and endangered
species, as well as an abundance of
waterfowl and neotropical migratory
birds. Northeastern North Carolina also
has a rich Native American and African
American heritage and a long history of
residents making a living off the land
and water, through agriculture,
forestry, and fishing.
Recognizing the importance of these
natural and cultural resources, Tyrrell
County has formally adopted ecotourism
as an economic development strategy.
